PERFECT 10 PICKS: NEW YEARS EVE!
HAPPY NEW YEAR'S EVE EVE!!!!!! I hope everyone has exciting plans. What I mean by that, is that I hope you are doing exactly what you want- staying in with friends, going out to a party with an open bar, traveling, etc. It seems like on NYE, everyone does things they don't want to do because they don't want to have a boring night. I am excited to be spending the evening with friends at a house party. I won't be wearing the sequin dresses or fake eyelashes (well, maybe I will), so I'm not offering any fashion advice, plus you can get that on EVERY other fashion blog.
I've done almost every type of NYE party over the years: from the pre-legal wandering around the Embarcadero with friends, to the over the top (and over priced) hotel parties, to house parties. Here are the things (in no particular order) that I have learned over the years and I wanted to share so you can have a perfect party!
I truly believe that how you spend your New Year's Eve and New Year's Day is how your year will go!
One // Bring bandaids and a change of shoes with you. No matter what your NYE plans are. You'll end up doing more walking than you want to because you'll either have to park far away or walk a mile trying to get an open Uber/ Lyft/ Sidecar.
Two // Put a BIG bottle of water and Advil/ Tylenol/ Excedrin next to your bed prior to going out. These are essentials you are going to need the next morning and you don't want to be trying to find them in the morning.
Three // Drink the good stuff. I won't be drinking this year, so please, drink the good stuff for me. People really feel that NYE is about quantity. One thing I know for sure-- it's about quality. Everything else just makes you feel terrible the next morning.
Four // Bring cash with you! I know we all use cards, apps, and Apple pay for most things, but this is the one night you are going to NEED cash. Bring small bills for tips, cabs, and I hate to say it, but public transportation if you're stuck on the Embarcadero and need to make it back to the Castro because you don't want to call your parents to pick you up (not like that happened to me in 2000, 2001, 2002).
Five // Have a buddy. Be safe. Know where you are. There are a lot of crazy things that happen on NYE, do not be a part of them!
Six // Bring a hostess/ host gift if you are going to a house party. They saved you from spending $300 on open bar, tube-top city, platform shoes, pole dancing crazies.
Seven // Have an awesome playlist. This is crucial for house parties. Take the time to curate something rather than rely on Pandora or iTunes radio-- especially if you don't have Pandora One because the commercials really kill the vibe, but mostly because those Nissan car commercials are really scary.
Eight // TAKE PICTURES!!! I have pictures from EVERY single New Year's Eve. It's a great way to document the weird night, but it also gives you a collection of photos to inspire you to stick to this year's resolution. #motivation
Nine // FRESH BREATH!!!! You need to go to Costco and get gum and mints. I've thought about doing this and selling them to everyone in the bar. No, not to try and trick people into thinking it's drugs, but because everyone is desperate for fresh breath for the New Year's Eve kiss and selling it is a quick way to make a buck (I'm always trying to find ways to make money for my shoe fund!).
Ten // Know where you are sleeping!!! I don't need to go into this one too much, but there's nothing worse than having to crash at someone's place because the hotel room you got for all 12 of you is being monitored by security and only those with a key are allowed access!
Who am I kidding? Here are the perfect pairs I would wear if I was going out for a night on the town!
