PERFECT PRESENTS: MARINE LAYER.
Last week when I was strolling around Hayes Valley with my girlfriend Michelle, we stopped into a store I hadn't been in to before (which is weird, because I used to spend a lot of time in Hayes Valley when I worked at SF Ballet School) and immediately fell in love-- I mean, this SF native loves a good San Francisco original and Marine Layer is no exception. Marine Layer is a San Francisco-based company that creates the most comfortable items EVER!
Yesterday I had the pleasure of visiting their workshop on California at Polk in the old Lumiere Theater. Honestly, it is the coolest working environment ever-- they have swings in the office! Everyone is super friendly, talented, and not to mention, super attractive!!! It was great to connect with their Marketing Director, Nish. He is so passionate about Marine Layer and is a great ambassador for the company. I picked up a few items and have been living in my new reversible (!!!!) Raglan sweater in Navy ever since.
Marine Layer is the type of store that you go in to pick something out for a boyfriend or husband and then end up getting five things for yourself. I am absolutely in love with their gingham bomber jackets!! Be sure to check out Marine Layer on Hayes and Octavia and their workshop space on California. Their workshop is awesome-- you can shop, see where they have photo shoots, and meet the designers and Marine Layer team.
Marine Layer at a Glance:
Everyone has a few perfect shirts. The ones that fit you just right; broken in over years of washing. The day his girlfriend threw away his favorite shirt, Mike Natenshon started working on Marine Layer. This was in 2009.
It took a couple of big credit card bills and over a year of development to make the first run of shirts, but they were worth the wait. Mike set up “shop” in his living room in San Francisco and sold the first hundred shirts in just a few weeks.
Clothes That Feel Good and Are Good
Every step of our production process happens in California. This minimizes our environmental footprint and supports three American factories that have been in business for over 25 years.
Our custom fabric is a blend of two yarns: Pima Cotton and MicroModa, which is a bio-based fabric that comes from recycled Beech Wood. From picking yarns to developing new color ways, everything we do is hands-on all the way through.
For this week's perfect presents edition, I picked the perfect pieces for you and your plus one from Marine Layer. They are so comfortable and such great quality. I'm going to get the matching gingham shirt and jacket for Jesse and me!
